A Passion for
Customer Impact
Mike Oliver has been with Assura since 2012, and what’s kept him energised over the years is the impact the software has on real businesses.
When Mike first joined, Assura was a much smaller company with a handful of large customers and a highly tailored workflow solution. His early focus was scaling the product and introducing it to new markets. A pivotal moment came in 2014–2015 when changes to NZ’s Health and Safety at Work legislation created a natural opportunity for Assura to evolve into the H&S space. Hellers became the first customer to use Assura with that focus, marking a key turning point for the company.
”My favourite aspect of my work is connecting with customers and seeing the real-world benefits they get from using Assura Software. It’s especially rewarding to keep in touch with customers over the years and learn how the product has grown and adapted with them as their business needs have evolved.
Growing with Customers
Today, Assura supports a wide range of large and complex businesses across different industries. From helping Tonkin + Taylor manage risk assessments and third-party approvals, to enabling Tru-line Civil to digitise site operations like plant maintenance and daily pre-starts, the product has proven to be highly adaptable.
“Our sectors and use cases vary a lot,” Mike explains, “but what our customers have in common is that they’re willing to invest in their people and in doing things right. They see safety as really important and want to do more than just tick a box.”
Supporting the Team and Looking Ahead
Over the last few months, Mike has been stepping in to help with account management while the team filled some key roles. “We’re a pretty small team with a flat structure; we all do whatever needs to be done on the day,” he says. Now, with things settling, he’s looking forward to shifting back to a more strategic focus—particularly when it comes to growing Assura’s footprint in Australia.
“There’s a lot of opportunity for us to leverage our New Zealand H&S experience and our existing Australian customers,” he says. “I’m actively exploring ways for us to grow in that larger market, which might include building relationships or partnerships.”
Future Opportunities for Assura
Mike is also spearheading work to expand Assura into the Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) space. “We’re currently working with a customer in the insurance sector to adapt the risk component of our H&S product to a corporate level,” he says. “That allows us to help businesses manage broader risks like cyber threats and financial instability.”
For Mike, the key to Assura’s continued success lies in staying close to the customers who challenge and inspire the team to keep evolving. “We want our customers talking to us about what they need the software to do so we can help them get the most out of it.”
