Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCMA) Builds Future-Proofed Quality and Safety Systems with Assura

Customisable Construction Compliance

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCMA) delivers world-leading equipment and construction solutions to projects of all scales. From the remote mines of Western Australia to the urban builds of New South Wales’ towns and cities, Hitachi’s wheel loaders, dump trucks, and excavators are engineered to maximise productivity. But their internal systems weren’t delivering on that same promise.

Historically, HCMA employed a handful of different applications and reporting systems to monitor its internal quality and safety practices and maintain compliance with Australia’s National Environmental Standards. With a large and complex workforce working on high-risk projects across the country, they realised that this piecemeal solution would not be able to support them as they grew.

To ensure their business processes and systems were as robust as their machinery, they sought out a new quality and safety solution from Assura.

Streamlining historical systems into one integrated workflow solution

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE

Comprehensive, adaptable safety and compliance

User-friendly interface for staff across many roles and sites

Fast, secure, targeted reporting features

Reduced administrative burden

With Assura, we were able to develop a platform that has met our ever-changing needs as the business grows. We signed up for a risk and H&S system, but they have allowed us to adapt it into an overall compliance system.

With a combination of pen-and-paper recording and a collection of different software applications, HCMA was quickly outgrowing its H&S and compliance systems. Response times were sometimes longer than desired due to the inability of on-site staff to efficiently report incidents and distribute critical information. The reporting capabilities of their software systems lacked the adaptability and functionality they needed.

HCMA required an integrated, automated quality and safety tool that could reduce the administrative burden from regulatory compliance. It needed to be intuitive enough for staff across a wide range of roles to use. Security and privacy were also significant priorities, with the need to distribute information not just quickly, but to the right people.

Assura worked closely with the HCMA team to create a tailor-made solution that now acts as a gateway for nearly all of its 1,600 employees to maintain quality and safety standards across the business. In particular, Assura is supporting HCMA with Risk Assessments for new projects and branches, Take 5 assessments by staff working on location, equipment certifications, ongoing reporting, and traffic and fuel management for its extensive vehicle fleet.

“Reporting makes the data tangible, and Assura’s simplicity means that anyone in the business can record and access the right information to empower them to make knowledge-based decisions.”

A complete digital solution that can evolve as the business evolves

HCMA recognised the need to streamline their historical quality and safety systems into one integrated workflow solution that could grow with the business as its operational, compliance and regulatory demands evolved. The team has since built deep and lasting relationships with Assura, who continue to work closely with HCMA to meet any new or updated workflow requirements.

“We don’t have to redesign everything as our processes evolve. We can just bring in a new workflow or update the historical one, rather than redesigning the back-end like you might have to with other providers.” – Scott Crews, Workplace H&S and Quality Assurance Manager

The management, efficiency and safety benefits have been far-reaching:

  • Shorter incident reporting and response times
  • More comprehensive reporting by on-site staff, including instant-upload photographs and attachments
  • Efficient, targeted reporting with automatic notifications for relevant personnel

Key Outcomes

Shorter incident response times

Better quality and safety information communicated

No critical reporting aspects missed

“Assura has delivered 100% on what they said they could do, with no limitations. We are helping to build their product to a different standard, and they’re helping to build our company to a different standard as well.”
